The activities contained in this workbook focus on problem solving skills, making inferences, and understanding cause and effect through the use of social stories, questions, and activities. Pictures are not provided in this book in order to help target auditory processing skills as well. All of the activities yield a percentage score to help track progress or to report as scores for screening and test purposes. Special education teachers, speech-language pathologists, therapists, Spanish-English teachers, and parents can all utilize the activities in this workbook.
Pragmatic Stories and Questions to Inference and Problem Solve can be used with monolingual English speakers or bilingual Spanish speakers from ages 10+ (elementary and middle school cognitive age). Few resources are available to treat Spanish-speakers’ pragmatic language skills in a therapeutic setting, and there are much fewer resources available to assess such skills; therefore, it is an important achievement to create this source for Spanish speakers. The stories will help students interpret challenging and confusing social situations. Children who demonstrate social avoidance and/or social awkwardness and/or behavioral difficulties may benefit most from these stories. Parents can incorporate this workbook into their daily reading or therapy homework.
This resource provides several worksheets to target the following objectives during therapy: (1) make inferences given a verbal/reading passage, (2) predict outcomes given a verbal/reading passage, (3) answer “wh” questions, (4) recall details from verbal/reading passages, (5) correctly respond to true-false statements, (6) improve the understanding of cause and effect, (7) comprehend idiomatic expressions.
